On Saturday December 3rd, 17 Members of the Club traveled up to Boston to play in the annual Patriot Cup Matches at The Tennis & Racquet Club. Each year the clubs rotate the location of the matches and while the matches are always competitive, there is also good fun and sportsmanship exhibited by both sides. Unfortunately, Newport did not fair so well in this years competition falling 11 to 7 in matches to the team from the north. It must be said, Newport was taking on a much younger team on average but it no way affected anyone’s competitive spirit. Some highlights of the matches were Dan Paquette playing in his first outside of Newport competitive event coming away with a record of 2 Wins and 1 Loss, Tom Rowe as always exhibited fine form coming away with 2 Wins and no loses, new member Elliot Van Buskirk putting on a splendid rookie debut with 2 Wins and no loses, as well as Bill Rives being steady as always and coming away with 2 Wins and 1 Loss. Newcomer Josh Freeman enjoyed his first exposure to competitive tennis earning his first win teaming up with Elliot in a convincing 6-1 match. As always the Boston hosts were gracious, the food was exceptional, however, they were put on notice that when they bring the Trophy down next year from Boston, it will be staying in Newport.
